The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) has identified the need for transmission reinforcement in the Edmonton area. The AESO is an independent, not-for-profit entity responsible for the safe, reliable and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System.
Increased demand for power and the age of the transmission system in the Edmonton region is causing congestion on the transmission system. The planned retirement of coal plants are changing the way the power flows and new transmission lines are needed to ensure a safe, reliable supply of electricity in the area.
