Overview
The South Foothills Transmission Project is one of many pieces identified in the Southern Alberta Transmission Reinforcement. The purpose of this reinforcement is to connect wind energy to Alberta’s electrical grid and to strengthen the transmission system in the area.
This project involves:
- a new line from south of Fort Macleod to north of High River
- a new substation at the north end of the line
- either a second new substation in the area south of Fort Macleod or alterations within an existing substation on the Piikani First Nation
Project Details
Communities involved: Town of High River, Town of Nanton, Town of Vulcan, Town Stavely, Town Claresholm, Town Granum, Town Fort Macleod.
Length of line: Approximately 130-180 kilometres in length depending on the final route selected
End points: south of Fort Macleod to north of High River
Line Voltage: 240 kV (240,000 volts)
Structure type: Double circuit 240 kV steel lattice tower
Right-of-way: 60 to 70 metres
Status of project: Consultation underway
