The Demand
Growth in the province of Alberta over the last several years has been steadily rising, while growth in Edmonton alone has been tremendous. The demand for power in the Edmonton area has grown by 400 megawatts over the last five years and is expected to grow by three per cent a year over the next 15 years. The transmission system in the Edmonton, Fort Saskatchewan and northeast Alberta areas needs to be reinforced to ensure the reliable supply of electricity.
The Challenges
The Edmonton region has grown with the addition of new industrial and residential power demands. The last major transmission line built in the area was more than 20 years ago when the population of Edmonton was just more than 550,000. Since then the area has added close to 200,000 people. A robust transmission system will ensure Alberta is well positioned for its future energy needs and will enable the continued economic growth of our province by providing people and business unrestricted access to power.
The Solution
The Alberta Electric System Operator has determined that an expansion and enhancement of the transmission system is required to unlock the electricity bottleneck in the system around Edmonton. New lines will improve the efficiency of the transmission system, allowing for easier movement of electricity and improved reliability to meet the increased demand for power.
