Transmission in Alberta
The need for transmission
- Alberta’s population has grown by one million people, or 42 per cent since 1988.
During this time only one major transmission line has been built. - The demand for power has been rising three per cent a year, and has risen more
than 17 per cent in the past five years alone.
AltaLink’s role
- AltaLink’s transmission system provides the vital high voltage link between Alberta’s
generation supply and the distribution systems that carry electricity directly to
consumers. - After assuming control of Alberta’s largest transmission system in 2002, AltaLink
became the first stand-alone transmission provider in Canada. - AltaLink owns and operates nearly 60 per cent of the transmission system in Alberta,
including approximately 11,800 kilometres of transmission lines and 270
substations. - AltaLink supplies 85 per cent of Alberta’s population with electricity.
