AESO Need approved by the Energy and Utilities Board (EUB)
Effective January 1, 2008, the Alberta Utilities Commission Act separated the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) into two separate regulatory bodies: the Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) and the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC).

August 2007
AltaLink withdrew two previously filed applications to the EUB and submitted a new application that included alternative routes that go around the Piikani and Blood Tribe First Nations Lands.
July 2008
AltaLink received approval from Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) for the portion of the preferred route that crosses the Piikani and Blood First Nations Lands.
August 2008
AltaLink withdrew the alternate routes from the application. The AUC scheduled a public hearing set for December 1, 2008.
March 2009
The AUC approved AltaLink’s application to build an approximately 100-km, 240-kilovolt (kV) transmission line between Pincher Creek and Lethbridge on March 10, 2009. In its Decision 2009-028, the AUC concluded AltaLink’s proposal was in the public interest, bearing in mind social, environmental and economic considerations, and met the need identified by the AESO. The AUC issues Permit to construct and License to operate to AltaLink.
