Heartland Transmission

The Project

Details | Schedule | Map | Environment

The Alberta Electric System Operator has identified that the existing transmission system in the southwest part of our province has insufficient capacity to transmit wind generated electricity to Alberta’s transmission grid. The Southwest 240 kV Project is required to connect the wind generation to the rest of the grid and to enable the continued development of wind energy projects in the southwest region of the province.

The 240 kV development in southwestern Alberta:

  • Provides adequate transmission capacity to connect existing and future wind generation;
  • Allows Albertans to access a clean source of electricity; and
  • Strengthens the electrical transmission system in the southwest region of Alberta.
  • Forecast project cost is $199 million.
