As a transmission facility owner (TFO) in Alberta, AltaLink is regulated by the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) and is subject to regulations and rulings of the AUC.

The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO), the independent, not-for-profit entity responsible for the safe, reliable and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System, determines the need for transmission facilities in Alberta and directs AltaLink to apply for approvals to construct and operate transmission facilities. Both the AESO’s need and AltaLink’s facilities applications must be approved by the AUC.
