The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) has identified the need to reinforce the transmission system in southern Alberta. Alberta’s electrical grid needs more capacity to make room for power generated from new wind farm projects proposed throughout southern Alberta. New transmission lines and substations are required to support this growth and collectively these projects make up the Southern Alberta Transmission Reinforcement (SATR).
The AESO filed the need for the SATR in a formal application known as a Needs Identification Document (NID) with the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) in December 2008. The AUC is a quasi-judicial agency established by the Alberta government that ensures the fair and responsible delivery of our utility services. The AUC completed a public hearing in Lethbridge to review the need for these projects on June 22, 2009. The AUC approved the need on September 8, 2009.
The SATR is a series of transmission projects that will reinforce and strengthen southern Alberta’s electrical grid.
The current SATR projects include the following:
- South Foothills Transmission Project
- West Brooks to East Medicine Hat Transmission Line and Medicine Hat Substation
- East Medicine Hat to Whitla Transmission Line and Whitla Substation
- New Russell Substation
- New Milo Substation
- Medicine Hat 183 kV Transmission Development (coming soon)
- Additions to Coleman Substation (coming soon)
.
Wind farm connection projects related to SATR include the following:
- East Palliser Transmission Project
- Castle Rock Ridge Wind Farm Connection
- Fidler Substation and Transmission Line
.
Each of these projects plays an important role and more details can be found on the specific project pages of this website as the projects develop.
Additional projects have been outlined in later stages of SATR and more information will be available in the future.
